We have no idea how many magi there were.... They were the maker of kings and now they would meet the King of kings..

The gold may have been used by Joseph to pay their way to flee from King Herod.
Herod The Great was very cruel and insecure and killed family and anyone he thought would threaten his throne.. He was troubled along with all Israel when he heard that a new king would be born.
It is troubling to me that no one but the shepherds and the wisemen went to seek out Jesus when he was born.
When the Magi came they came to the HOUSE not the stable. Jesus was a young child by the time they reached him.
